Ingredients: Very special. Also known as Mary's Sugar Cookies.
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour*
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Granulated sugar
Mix thoroughly butter, confectioners' sugar, egg, vanilla and almond extract. Blend in flour, soda
and cream of tartar. Cover; chill 2 to 3 hours.

Directions:Heat oven to 375: Divide dough in half. Roll .
each half 3/16 inch thick on lightly floured cloth covered board. Cut into desired shapes; sprinkle with granulated sugar. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until light brown on edge.
ABOUT 5 DOZEN 2- TO 2 1/2-INCH COOKIES.
VARIATION
Paintbrush Cookies: Do not sprinkle cookies with sugar; before baking, paint designs on cookies with small paintbrushes and Cookie Paint: Divide small amounts of evaporated milk (or mixture of 1 egg yolk and 1/4 teaspoon water) among several cups. Color each with a different food color. If "paint" thickens, add few drops water. |

Notes: I always made rolled sugar cookies with the kids during the holidays. Traditions are a wonderful. However, Pat and I both know that you & the kids start baking sugar cookies, but you finish them by yourself!
