1 cup shortening
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups oatmeal
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup nuts or raisins (optional)

Thoroughly cream together shortening and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix well. Add oatmeal and cinnamon; mix well. sift together dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Stir in nuts and raisins, if desired. Drop by spoonfuls onto baking sheets. Bake about 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
