2 1/4 cups chopped dates
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup nuts
1 cup shortening
4 cups flour, sifted
2 cups packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 eggs, well beaten

Directions:
Directions:
1. Prepare filling: Combine dates, sugar and water. Cook, cool and then add nuts. Set aside.

2. Combing remaining ingredients (shortening through eggs). Mix well. Split dough in half. Roll each half out 1/4 inch thick. Spread with date filling. Roll up into jelly rolls. Chill. Slice into 1/4 inch slices and bake on greased cookies sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes. Cool on wire rack.
