6 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup shortening
1 pkg dry yeast
1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Sift dry ingredients. Add shortening and blend as for pie crust. Add yeast mixed in 1/2 cup lukewarm water until dissolved. Add buttermilk and knead only until ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Put into tightly covered bowl. Refrigerate until ready to use. Can be frozen.

Bake at 375º for 40 minutes.

Mom made great bread, but I don't remember the buttermilk. Dad really enjoyed buttermilk from time to time, I just don't remember her using it as an ingredient when she made bread. Still, I assume this bread is excellent or it wouldn't have been included in her "special" cookbook.
