1 1/2 Cups Brown Sugar
1 Cup raisins
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1 Cup hot water

1 tsp. soda dissolved in 1/3 cup of very hot water
2 Cups flour
1 tsp baking powder

Preheat oven to 350º
Grease and flour 9x13 pan
In a small pan combine brown sugar, raisins, seasoning and 1 cup hot water. Boil for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and cool until shortening forms a small coating on the mixture. After it is cool add soda, flour and baking powder. Stir until batter is well mixed. Put into cake pan and bake for about 25 minutes or until a tooth pick inserted in the cake comes out clean.

This cake was also known as a war cake. It was my mothers (Iva Pearl McMillan McCarry) recipe. Very simple ingredients. It does not need a frosting as it is very moist. It is simply delicious warm from the oven. Brings back a lot of memories
