1 cup butter flavored Crisco or Land O'Lake butter
1 3/4 cups brown sugar, lightly packed
2 eggs
1/4 cup buttermilk
4 cups plain flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. mace
1 tsp. salt
1 cup oats
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup chopped pecans
1 1/2 cups candied cherries & mixed fruit cut into pieces
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. allspice

Mix shortening, sugar and eggs well. Add buttermilk. Sift all dry ingredients together and add to mixture, blending well. Mix in oats, pecans, dates and fruit. Mix well. Chill dough 1 hour. Drop by teaspoon approximately 2 inches apart on slightly greased cookie sheet.
Bake 10-12 minutes at 400º.

Dough can be stored in refrigerator up to 1 week

This recipe was given to me by Nancy Allen - mother to Bill and Barbara, wife of Battle. I make these cookies every year at Christmas - it is a favorite for me and Granddad (aka Uncle Bill to the family).
