Directions:
Cook sugar, syrup, water and salt in thick saucepan to hard-ball stage (mixture forms had ball in cold water or 250 to 266 degrees on a candy thermometer) and it spins a foot-long thread as you hold the spoonful of syrup up over the pan. Pour slowly, with constant beating over stiffly beaten egg whites; continue beating until candy begins to shine and hold its shape. Add nuts and vanilla. Pour into oiled pans. Cut into squares when cold. Candy may be shaped into a loaf or formed into irregular pieces by dropping it from tip of spoon onto waxed paper.
