2 cups sugar
1/2 cup snowdrift
3 eggs
1/3 cup cocoa
1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 cup buttermilk
pinch of salt
1 tsp soda
2 cups plain flour

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening and add eggs one at a time beating well after each egg. Stir cocoa to above mixture. Stir soda into sour milk, add half of flour and milk. Beat 2 minutes at #4 speed on mixer. Add rest of flour and milk; beat 2 more minutes. Bake in 2 9 inch layers at 350º until done.

The first time I saw this recipe it told you to beat it so many times with a spoon. She worked with it until she could change it to use a mixer. This recipe is very old. Aunt Elva gave it to me in the mid-sixties and it had been in her family for a very long time. My grandfather (Alcus Alford) said it was his favorite as a child.
