2 oz. red food coloring
1 t. vanilla
1 T. cocoa
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 large eggs
2 1/4 c. white Lily All-Purpose Flour (or cake flour)
1 t. salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 t. baking soda
1 T. vinegar



Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1/2 c. butter
3 c. powdered sugar
1 t. vanilla

Serves: 12-15

In a small bowl, blend food coloring, vanilla and cocoa. Set aside. In large bowl, beat shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in eggs. Blend in cocoa mixture. In separate bowl combine flour and salt. In alternating increments, add flour mix and buttermilk to batter, blending thoroughly after each. Stir together baking soda and vinegar, then gently fold into batter. Spray and dust 3 8-in. round pans. Bake 350º for 30-35 min. Cool 10 min. and remove from pans.

For frosting, combine cream cheese and butter and beat until smooth. Beat in powdered sugar and vanilla. Add powdered sugar to obtain desired consistency. Be sure cake is completely cool before frosting. Store in refrigerator.
