1/2 cup shortening or butter/margarine
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups applesauce
1/2 cups water
3 cups flour
1 cup raisins
1 cup dates
1 cup nuts
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp soda
1 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla

Directions:

Mix shortening, sugar and eggs until fluffy.Zdd applesauce, water, flour, soda, cloves, cinnamon, salt. Stir. Add vanilla, raisins, dates and nuts. Bake at 350º for 40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

This was Grandma (Margaret) Nuttall's holiday fruit cake. Frost with cream cheese/powdered sugar frosting.
