"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Ingredients:
1 lb. butter
2 c. sugar

2 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
3 c. oatmeal
sprinkle of salt

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar for a long time until creamy.

Mix remaining ingredients with your electric mixer and spoon on cookie sheet. Bake @ 325 for 10 minutes on top rack only. These cookies don't look finished in the oven. Leave them on the cookie sheet for a few minutes and then they flatten out. I found 10 minutes exactly on the top rack cooks best.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Grandma Nordstrom used to sit with me at her kitchen table and we'd eat these. They were my cousin Vicki's recipe. (She was a home economic major at Northwest University .....and then became an astrologist!).
