1 Tablespoon olive oil
1/4 cup walnuts, coarsely broken
1 pound ground beef and pork mixed half and half
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1/4 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 16 oz. can tomatoes
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper seasoning
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 6 inch pita bread rounds
4 large lettuce leaves

1. In a 12-inch skillet over medium heat, in hot olive oil, cook walnuts until golden, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove walnuts to paper towels to drain. Wipe skillet clean.

2. In same skillet over high heat, cook ground beef and pork, and onion until all pan juices evaporate and meat is well browned, stirring frequently. Add mushrooms, tomatoes with their liquid, sugar, red pepper and salt. Heat to boiling; Reduce heat to medium and cook uncovered for 10 minutes to blend flavors and until liquid is absorbed.

3. To serve, cut each pita crosswise in half. Tuck a lettuce leaf into each pita half. Spoon meat mixture into pitas; sprinkle with toasted walnuts.

(You can also use flour tortillas to make a wrap)
Since our mushroom incident, I no longer use mushrooms, but I substitute sweet red and orange peppers and these are just as good. Serves 4.
