1/2 c. shortening
1-1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 oz.red food coloring
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp cocoa
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp soda
1 tsp vinegar
2-1/2 c. flour
1 tsp salt

Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Set aside. In small bowl make a paste by mixing food coloring, vanilla and cocoa - add to creamed mixture. Mix (buttermilk, soda and vinegar) and mix in alternately with dry ingred ( flour and salt). Pour into (2) 9" pans lightly oiled and floured. Bake @ 350 for 35 minutes. Cool. May split into 4 layers. Frost with Butter frosting: Cook 1 c. milk and 3 tbsp flour until thick. Cool. Cream 1 c. sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 c. butter and beat well into white sauce.
