1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted

1 square ( 1 ounce ) unsweetened chocolate, melted
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
2/3 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 recipe frosting


Bottom layer: Sift together flour, soda, and salt; combine with oats and brown sugar. stir in 1/2 c melted butter.
Pat mixture in bottom of 11x7x1-1/2 inch baking pan; Bake in a 350 oven for 10 minutes.
Middle layer: combine chocolate, 1/4 c melted butter, and granulated sugar. add egg; beat well. sift together 2/3 c flour, baking powder, and 1/4 tsp salt; add alternately with milk and vanilla to chocolate mixture; fold in nuts. spread batter over baked layer.
Bake at 350º for 25 minutes longer.
Frosting: combine 1 square (1oz) unsweetened chocolate and 2 tbl butter in a small saucepan.
Stir over low heat till chocolate melts.
Remove from heat, add 1-1/2 c sifted confectioners’ sugar and 1 tsp vanilla. Blend in enough hot water (~2 tbl) to make almost pourable consistency.
Spread over cooled brownies. Top with walnut halves.
