  • April Showers Bring May Flowers – and Mothers’ Day Cookbooks!

    This is a great time of year. It’s rainy, it’s sunny, it’s warm, it’s cold. We are all getting excited for new growth and fun get-togethers outside.

    Mothers’ Day Deadline

    Mother’s Day is coming quickly – May 10th – and it also is one of the best times to have your family cookbook published. If you are planning on having your cookbook ready for Mothers’ Day, you’ll need to get your print orders in by Wednesday April 22nd in order to receive them on time for gifts.

    Wedding season is coming, too! How about a family & friends cookbook for a shower or bridal party gift?

    Getting Ready for Family Reunions

    If your family has an annual family reunion in the summer, now is the time to get people contributing to your family cookbook. A cookbook is a great way to get family members excited about getting together – and what family reunion did not feature mountains of mouth watering food and family recipes!
    If you don’t want to get people contributing before-hand, use the event to collect email address and get family members eager to contribute their best recipes.

    The site is clean and works. Better than that it is simple enough for non Computer/Internet people – I know because I know some people like that who enjoy it. The interface is wonderful and easy to use too. But, the customer service is amazing. When I started with my cookbook, I had a few technical questions and they were all addressed quickly with easy to understand replies. I, my family, wanted only an online place to share recipes. But, I can only assume that the other aspects of the site would work just as well. On a scale of one to ten I give it an eleven.

This cookbook is really priceless.  I printed copies for the ‘next generation’ (my sons, neices and nephews).  I use my printed copy all the time, as well as the smartphone app when I’m in the grocery store, or the web app when I want to share a recipe with a friend.  Love it!

    When I decided to do “Four Sisters, A Legacy of Love from our Kitchens”, it was a two fold project:  A one stop place to have our family favorite recipes and a fund raiser for both Diabetes and Crohn’s organizations on behalf of two of our grandchildren.  I loved being able to contact the company and talk to an actual person with concerns and questions.  I loved that they worked with us on our cover allowing us to use the design and photos we wanted.  I was a bit naïve thinking I “might” sell 50 and the orders came in just by word of mouth on facebook and we sold over 300 and were able to make a nice donation to our causes.  We have requests to do a second printing and maybe one of these days we will do just that!  Highly recommend this professional company!

    Judging a Cookbook By It’s Cover

    Let’s be honest, most of us do judge a book by it’s cover, at least initially. If two cookbooks are side by side, the one you are more likely to pick up is the one that looks more like a cookbook you would like to read.

    For almost 10 years, FamilyCookbookProject.com has been helping individuals and families create personal cookbooks that reflect their own personality.

    From the thousands of cookbooks we have printed for people this year, we looked at which ones were the most popular.

    Here is what we found:

    A Custom Cookbook Cover

    It is no surprise that the Custom Color Cover option was the number one most popular cover option. With the advances in desktop publishing and our easy to use guidelines. Creating a custom cookbook cover is a snap. Unlike many other cookbook publishers, we also do not charge extra for a custom cover. When combined with the B&W option, custom cookbook covers accounted for 40 percent of all covers printed in 2013.

    To the right is an  example of a simple custom cookbook cover created for one of our family cookbooks. It uses a collage of photos run through a software program to arraign them into a shape. A personalized title and subtitle complete the cover elements to bring together the pages of a lasting memory.

    The Great Family Cookbook Project also maintains a growing library of free cookbook cover options for their editors to choose from.

    Recipe Tree Cookbook Cover

    From the cookbook covers offered on our website, Recipe Tree was be far the most popular, beating the next most popular cookbook cover by more than a 3 to 1 margin.

    Almost a quarter of the cookbooks published with Family Cookbook Project in 2013 selected Recipe Tree as their cover. Many people choose this cover because of it’s tie to the concept of a family tree.

    The remaining covers in the top 10 most popular cookbook covers of 2013 are more closely related.

    Seven percent of cookbook editors selected either Rolling Pins, Garden #1 or Pie in Corner as their cookbook cover.

    Five percent selected either a Black and White Custom cover, or Wholesome Pie cookbook cover.

    Garden #2, Antique Oval and Cutting Board round out our top 10 for 2013.

    Family Cookbook Project is please to announce the launch of a new Pinterest Board – What’s for Breakfast? Here you will find the best ways to start your day from the editors of Family Cookbook Project. 

    Pinterest is a social media site that allows users to share photos that appeal to them. It’s not surprising that recipes and photos of food are one of the largest categories on Pinterest. 

    Already there are 19 fantastic breakfast recipes including Breakfast Pizza Cups by Trenton Wilken from his Trenton’s Cookbook, Hawaiian French Toast by Katie Sechrist from Katie Kay’s Kitchen Cookbook and Breakfast Hash from Nana and Amy’s memories cookbook.
