1/4 cup butter
1-3/4-2 pounds Granny Smith apples, pared, cored and sliced.
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 cup water
Topping:
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 tlbs. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup melted butter
2/3 cup milk
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
1) Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.
2) Prepare Filling: Melt the butter in a 13x9x2" baking dish in the pre-heated oven. Add apples, toss to coat. Stir together the sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle evenly over the apples. Pour the water over the apple mixture.
Prepare the Topping: Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in medium size bowl. Add the butter, milk, eggs and vanilla. Beat for two minutes. Spread mixture evenly over the apples to cover completely.
Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes. Let stand for 15 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm.
Spoon juices from bottom of panover cake.

My Mother, Ida Rottluff Warns, made this with apples we grew. I also make it with apricots we grow, reducing cinnamon to 1/2 tsp. and adding 1/4 tsp. nutmeg.
