2 sticks butter -room temp
1 cup sugar
3 tsp. anise extract
6 large eggs
3/4 tsp. salt
4 1/2 to 5 cups flour or more as needed
6 tsp. baking powder




Frosting
1 box confectioner's sugar
dash of anise extract
dash of food coloring if desired
1/4 to 1/3 cup of milk or as needed to form a silky light frosting

Preheat oven to 350°

Grease or spray 2 cookie sheets

Combine all dry ingredients and set aside

Beat butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time. Add anise extract. Slowly add dry ingredients until well combined. This should form a soft dough that comes away from your mixing bowl. It should be easy to handle.

Take small portions of the mixture, form a rope and wrap it around to form a knot-like cookie. Place on cookie sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes. Do not over bake. Cool completely before frosting.
