½ Gallon Milk
1 ⅔ cups sugar
4 heaping Tbsp flour
2 eggs, separated
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Heat milk until scalding. Beat egg whites until stiff. Mix sugar and flour together. Beat egg yolks, mix with a little milk add to the sugar and flour and beat until foamy. Temper the egg mixture with a bit of the scalded milk. Add that mixture slowly to the scalded milk, stirring well, then cook on medium heat for 10 minutes until mixture thickens a bit. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites and chill. Once chilled, add in vanilla and nutmeg to taste.

This was a family favorite but it's damn tricky to make. Grandma's recipe is short on instructions. If you're not careful when you incorporate the eggs you'll get a curdled mess. But if you get it right, it's marvelous.

Grandma and my mom always served this with peanut butter and saltine sandwiches!
