9 inch pie crust

2 T. ground almonds
2 T. sugar

FILLING:
1/2 c. sugar, divided
3 T. cornstarch
3/4 c. syrup from cherries
2 15 oz. cans cherries, drained (save syrup)
1 T. butter
2 T. lemon juice
1 t. almond extract

MERINGUE:
2 large egg whites, room temp
pinch salt
1/4 t. cream of tarter
1/2 t. vanilla
1/4 c. sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Put pie crust in pan, then sprinkle mixed almonds and sugar evenly over crust. Prick and bake it for 25 minutes at 350'.
Over medium heat combine and cook filling ingredients.
For meringue, combine everything except sugar and beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar until still peaks form and meringue is glossy.
Pour filling into baked crust. Top with meringue and bake for 15 minutes or until meringue is golden brown. Let cool for one hour, then refrigerate for 3 hours before cutting.
