2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup shortening (soft)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 cup thick cold applesauce
3/4 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Icing: 1 cup brown sugar, 1/8 tsp salt, 2 tbsp butter, 1 tsp vanilla and 1 tbsp cream

Preheat oven 350 degrees.

Sift together dry ingredients and spices. Cream shortening, sugar and eggs; add applesauce, raisins and nuts. Mix together. Pour into greased 8x8 baking pan and bake about 45 mins.

Icing: combine in saucepan the brown sugar, salt and butter. Cook, stirring until sugar is dissolved, then cook without stirring, until mixture forms a soft ball when a little is dropped in cold water. Cool to lukewarm and add 1 tsp vanilla and 1 tbsp heavy cream. Continue beating until spreading consistency is smooth. Spread over cake.
