¾ C. Crisco
1 C. Sugar
1 Egg (well beaten)
4 teaspoons Molasses
2 teaspoons Baking Soda
1 rounded teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
2 C. sifted flour

additional sugar for rolling balls

Preheat oven to 350º

Cream Crisco and sugar. Stir in egg and molasses. In a separate bowl stir together baking soda, spices, and flour. gradually flour mixture to creamed shortening mixture. With hands, gently roll dough into 1" balls. Be gentle, don't press them tightly. Roll balls in granulated sugar. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, just until very lightly brown around edge. These will puff up.

These are a favorite. While going thru recipes, I found a very old one from Grandmother Virginia. As I got ready to include it, I realized they are identical! Good recipes stick around. These will sometimes stay puffed, and sometimes flatten out as they cool. Either way they are great if you like spices. Store in airtight container.
