1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 onion
1 Tbsp (or 5-6 cloves) minced garlic
1 lb. very lean ground beef (90/10)
1 lb. ground Italian sausage
1 Tbsp sugar
1 28 oz. can tomato sauce
1 28 oz. can Italian style crushed tomatoes
1 Tbsp dried basil
1/2 Tbsp oregano leaves OR 1/2 tsp ground oregano
Salt and Pepper to taste
1 lb. spaghetti noodles

Directions:

Heat oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add beef, sausage, and onion and cook until mostly browned, about 5 minutes. Drain if desired. Stir in garlic until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and sugar. Reduce heat to low, simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt, pepper, basil and oregano and simmer for another 10-15 minutes.

Serve over cooked noodles.

Look, you can dump a few jars of spaghetti sauce into a pot with a bag of frozen meatballs and pull off a decent dinner. But, occasionally, you might want to make a proper meat sauce. And, this will do it! This is the recipe that Nona used, and it never fails.

Just, be careful not to burn the sauce, keep the temp fairly low after you add the tomato sauce.
