Crumble:
2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup brown sugar (I prefer dark but use what you have)
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt

Filling:
2 cups chopped dates (be sure pits are out)
½ cup white sugar
1 tbsp. butter
¾ cup cold water
1 tbsp. orange juice

Directions:
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350º.
2. Sift flour and baking soda. Mix in other crumb ingredients except butter. Rub in shortening (butter) as if making pastry.
3. Combine filling ingredients together (dates through orange juice) in a bowl.
4. Spread half of crumb mixture into a 8"x8" square baking dish. Cover with filling mixture, then spread remaining crumb mixture over that.
5. Bake at 350º for 40 minutes. Cool and cut into squares.
