1/2 c butter or margarine, softened
1/2 c shortening
1 c powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 t almond extract
1 t vanilla
2 1/2 c flour
1 t salt
1/2 red food coloring
1/2 crushed peppermint candy
1/2 c sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 375º. Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, powdered sugar, egg and flavorings. Blend in flour and salt. Divide dough in half: blend food coloring into one half. Shape 1 t dough from each half into a 4 inch rope. For a smoother rope, roll them back and forth on a lightly floured board. Place ropes side by side and lightly twit together. Complete one cookie at a time. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Curve top down to form the handle of the cane. Bake about 9 minutes or until set and are lightly brown. Mix candy and sugar. Immediately sprinkle cookies with mixture, remove from baking sheet.
