3/4 cup of chopped walnuts
1 cup of chopped dates
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup Crisco shortening
3/4 cup boiling water
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour (I only use unbleached flour)
1 cup sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Combine nut, dates, soda, salt in a mixing bowl. Add shortening and boiling water, and mix.

Allow mixture to stand for 15 minutes then stir to blend. Beat eggs and add vanilla. Sift sugar and flour and add to date mixture.

Grease and flour loaf pans or use mini loaf pans (fill 3/4" high in small mini pans.)

Bake approx. 1 hour at 350º Test with toothpick. Some ovens vary so check after 45 minutes to see if they look done.

Cool thoroughly. These can be frozen with no problem. Great with cream cheese!
