6 cups water
2 tablespoons salt
½ pound bacon, cooked ~ optional

Directions:
Directions:
Rinse pinto beans and sort out "bad" beans. Put into 6 cups, boiling water. Bring back to a boil and cook, without a lid, for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to medium low, cover with lid, and simmer for 3 to 4 hours.
With 30 minutes to go, add crumbled, cooked bacon. Add salt to taste.

** To make refried beans, follow directions above. Drain all of the liquid into a large bowl. Add beans to a skillet. Over medium, high heat, smash most of the beans, adding bean "juice" until correct consistency is reached.
