Directions:GRAMMA ELSIE STORY: Mom made this chili for us often. We almost always had plenty of ground beef on hand. Dad kept a few beef cattle on the farm, and so meat was a staple at the dinner table. Mom served this chili on a plate with a fork. (Oh dear, maybe we shouldn't have put it in the Soup Category!?!) One interesting event regarding this meal occurred when Billy and I were first married. I prepared this recipe, and he didn't quite know what to make of it. He had "never" eaten chili with a fork and on a plate. And...he was pretty impressed! His mom was a good cook, but when the kids were little at their house, the chili had lots of beans and liquid and not much meat. The only thing I added when I first started cooking on my own was onion and a little more chili powder. Mom was allergic to onions and liked things a little bland. My recollection is that we also had canned beets with Mom's Chili. It just seemed to go well together. (At least for our family). |

Notes: The photo of Annette is one of my favorites. It was taken in 1960 (as states on the back of the picture), so that made her about 3 years old. What a cutie!!
