Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 German chocolate cake mix
1 can evaporated milk
1 bag (12 ounces) Kraft caramels
1 bag (12 ounces) chocolate chips

Directions:
Directions:
Prepare cake mix according to box instructions. Generously grease a 9"x 13" baking pan. Pour ⅓ of the cake batter into the pan. Bake for 10 minutes at the temperature recommended on the box instructions. While cake is baking, melt caramels in saucepan with ½ can of milk. Remove cake from oven. Pour caramel mixture over hot cake. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top of caramel. Pour remaining batter evenly over top. Bake for 25 to 30 more minutes until top layer is done. Let cool completely and cut into squares. Makes between 30-36 squares.
Note: Lois had another recipe called "Turtle Cake" that was very similar to this one. The only differences were: Change evaporated milk to sweetened condensed milk, and use ½ the cake mix on each baking. For the first baking, up the time to 15 minutes. Also, in this alternate version, regular chocolate cake mix was used instead of German Chocolate cake mix.

Personal Notes:
This is one of the few recipes that Lois carefully cut out of a magazine and did not copy to an index card. Most all of her recipes were re-written with special reference to the person that gave her the recipe.
