2½ c. sifted flour
½ tsp. salt
1½ tsp. baking soda
3½ c. rolled oats
2 c. brown sugar
1½ c. shortening or margarine
Filling:
1 lb. dates, chopped or pieces
2 c. boiling water
1 c. sugar
3 tbsp. flour

Directions:
Directions:
For crust, sift together flour, salt, and baking soda. Combine with rolled oats and brown sugar. Cut in shortening or margarine until finely distributed. Reserve 2 c. of mixture for topping, pack remainder in a greased 9 x 13" baking pan. For filling, combine sugar and flour, gradually add boiling water. Add dates, cook over medium heat until thickened. Spread over oatmeal mixture in pan. Sprinkle with remaining topping. Bake at 350º for about 20 minutes.
