5 eggs
1 egg also for brushing over loaves
1 lb flour
½ lb butter
½ cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
5 drops of anise oil

Directions:
Directions:
1. Beat 5 eggs with salt; add sugar and blend thoroughly.
2. Sift flour and baking powder, blend into egg mixture.
3. Add anise oil (other flavorings could be used).
4. Blend until soft dough forms.
5. Knead dough until smooth and shape into 2 loaves.
6. Brush with 1 beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
7. Place loaves on greased baking sheet.
8. Bake at 350 º 15 - 20 minutes or until golden brown.
9. When loaves have cooled slice into 1" slices and toast both sides in a 350 º oven.

Aunt Clara came to the U.S. from Palermo, Sicily, in 1915 with her mother, Giovanna, sister Rose and younger brother Peter (who was Anita's maternal grandfather). She was a young engaged girl, whose fiance, Uncle Jack Sacco, stayed behind in Italy, serving in the Italian army during the 1st World War. They later were united and married in the U.S. Recipe submitted by Anita's mother.
