Now this is a straight forward drink, but as a bartender I can tell you that I have ordered a "very dirty, very dry, vodka martini on the rocks" on many occasions and have had it served completely wrong more times than not. So to be clear, a traditional martini has dry vermouth in it, which I do not like. If you order a dry martini, you should get a little vermouth. If you order a Very dry martini you should get no vermouth. If you are a martini lover, always be VERY specific when ordering your drink, without being a jerk, of course. Be kind, but specific. *Side note, martini's are traditionally gin, so if you want vodka, you must say it.

I now say that I want a "Very dirty vodka martini (vodka brand if preferred), No vermouth, on the rocks". I also like to have blue cheese olives if available, but that's just me. If they don't have them I love regular olives too. * Don't use blue cheese olive juice for your dirty martini, it's too strong. Use regular olive juice.

I prefer my martini's on the rocks because they are strong and the ice mellows out the drink and keeps it cold longer. So if you're like me, pour the ingredients over ice in a rocks glass and enjoy, otherwise pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker, stir or shake, and serve it in a traditional martini glass.
