3 c. Flour
1 tbsp. Shortening
1 tbsp. Sugar
1 tsp. Salt
1 pkg. Fast Rising Yeast
1 c. Water

Criscoº shortening or Vegetable Oil

Directions:
Directions:
Add Fast Rising Yeast to warmed Water (120º).
Mix Flour, Sugar and Salt.
Cut in Shortening.
Add Yeast and mix.
Knead, form a ball and place in a greased bowl.
Cover with plastic and hand towel and place in a warm environment.
Let rise.
Once doubled in size, punch down.

Heat Shortening or Vegetable Oil in pan until a drop of dough sizzles.
Pinch off an inch of Dough and smooth out using thumb and fore finger in a rolling motion.
Drop into hot oil and let brown on one side.
Turn over and brown other side.
Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towel.
Serve warm with condiments (ie: butter, jam, powdered sugar)

This is a Johnson family favorite. Each generation has enjoyed these and have a different story. I remember coming in from mass and grandma and the aunts in the kitchen cooking and handing out doughs by the plate full to the kids. In later years Mom went to frozen bread and fried it in oil.
