Ingredients:

1 ¾ c flour
2 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
¼ c shortening
¾ c sugar
1 egg
¾ c milk
1 tsp vanilla

Sauce: Vanilla, Lemon, Rind or Nutmeg
1 c sugar
2 c water
2 Tbls corn starch
⅓ c butter
2 Tbls vanilla or lemon or rind or nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add shortening, sugar, egg, milk, and vanilla
Beat till smooth

Grease and flour 9-inch square pan

Bake 350º for 25 - 30min
Vanilla sauce on top

Sauce
Mix sugar and corn starch
gradually stir in water
Boil 1min stirring constantly
Stir in butter and flavoring
