Christmas Sugar Cookies Recipe

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1½ cups granulated sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
4 cups all-purpose flour

Red and green food coloring (optional)

Cookie dough:
In mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
Beat in the eggs until they are well incorporated.
Stir in the vanilla, baking powder, and salt.
Mix in the flour, one cup at a time.
Chill at least an hour.

[Optional: For colored dough]: Divide the dough into three equal parts. Color one part green, one part red, and leave one part plain. [Note: You may leave the entire dough plain if you wish to decorate only with colorful icing or other cookie decorations.]

Preheat oven to 375
Roll out dough to a thickness of about 1/8 inch.
Cut Christmas shapes, such as stars or bells, or use cookie cutters. [Tip: If desired, form a hole at the top of the cookies before baking so that cookies can be hung on the tree.]
Place the cookies on to a greased baking sheet.
Bake 6 to 10 minutes, or until cookies are firm to the touch.
Cool on racks.
[Optional] Decorate the cookies with candies and icing.
