Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 c Crisco
2 c sugar
3 eggs
1 pt honey
½ c buttermilk
1 c sweet or sour cream
2 t cinnamon
2 t baking soda
1 t baking powder
1 t salt
2 t vanilla or 1 t anise oil
½ t white or black pepper
8 - 9 c flour, enough flour for a stiff dough

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together Crisco, sugar, eggs and honey. Then add buttermilk, cream, cinnamon, soda, baking powder, salt, vanilla (or anise oil) and pepper. Cream well. Stir in flour a little at a time.

Chill dough overnight then pinch off dough the size of a walnut. I roll my dough into a long rope about ½ inch or thicker then cut with knife into ½ inch pieces. They should stay in a ball shape. If the cookies are too flat, add a little more flour. Bake in a medium oven at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.

Grandma Helen said this was her sister Ruth's recipe as she would make them every year to sell at the Deutsches Fest. Nina thought the recipe came from Mary Lou Hopp. It sounds like this recipe was shared with all of the family.
