2 slices of lemon
4 whole cloves
2 tablespoons sugar or more, to taste
1½ stick cinnamon
2 cups (1 pint) Claret or Burgundy (jug wine, not an expensive one)

Stud each lemon slice with 2 cloves and combine them with sugar and cinnamon sticks in a 1 quart enameled, copper or stainless-steel pan or chafing dish. Add half of the wine and place over moderate heat, stir occasionally with a wooden spoon until sugar is dissolved, then pour in remaining wine. Continue stirring until wine almost reaches the boiling point. Remove form heat, take out lemon slices and cinnamon with a slotted spoon, and pour hot wine into mugs.

This is the perfect drink for "after ski" or after walking in the winter woods. It is the drink that keeps shopper warm at Christmas Marts all over Germany. It always reminds me of our Army days and Christkindlesmart in Nurnburg.

One recipe suggested cooking the first three ingredients until the sugar melts and then adding the wine. I just dissolve the sugar in part of the wine. I never really measure, but you get the idea. It is a wonderfully warming drink on a cold night.
