4 cups sifted flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
2 tblsp caraway seeds (I omit these but you might like!)
1/4 cup butter
2 cups seedless raisins
1 egg
1 1/3 cup buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Combine and mix flour, brown sugar, salt, baking powder and caraway seeds. Add butter, cutting into dry ingredients with two knives until mixture is crumbly. Add raisins, beat eggs and add buttermilk and baking soda. Pour liquid into dry mixture and mix well. Kneed dough on floured board until smooth. Shape into a round loaf and place on a greased cookie sheet. Cut a quarter inch deep cross on top of loaf and bake in 375º oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

This is Grandma Mary Dwyer's recipe passed down through the generations from her mother, Catherine Coen Kenny born in 1899 in Chicago. Catherine's mother, Catherine Hackett Coen, was a native of Ireland who came to the United States in the 1880's.
