Ingredients:
Ingredients:
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cup milk
2 eggs, separated
1 teasppoon vanilla
Vanilla Wafers
2 large bananas, sliced

(See "Personal Notes" below if you prefer to increase vanilla pudding ingredients)

Directions:
Directions:
Blend 1/2 cup sugar, the flour and salt thoroughly together. Add 1/2 cup milk, stirring to make smooth. Add remaining milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Beat egg yolks slightly. Add some hot custard slowly to yolks. Return to pan, and cook 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Add vanilla. Line the bottom and sides of a baking dish with vanilla wafers. Arrange bananas in layers on bottom. Pour custard over bananas.

Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Add remaining sugar 1 tablespoon at a time, beating constantly. Spread meringue over custard, [spreading meringue slightly over edges of bowl or pan to keep it from shrinking when browned.] Bake in moderately slow oven (about 325º) until browned. Serve hot or cold. Serves 8.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This was Daddy's favorite dessert. He liked extra vanilla pudding, as opposed to wafers (more creamy, less dry), so I always multiplied the pudding ingredients by 1-1/2 . By increasing the bananas slightly, I could make two layers of wafers, pudding and bananas.
