1 stick margarine
1-1/2 cups sugar, separated
1 cup self-rising flour, OR
1 cup plain flour + 1/4 teaspoon salt + 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 cup milk
1 can pitted unsweetened cherries (or peaches, apricots or pineapple). [Do not use canned pie filling].

Put margarine in a deep dish. Place in oven to melt. Beat together 1 cup of the sugar, and the self-rising flour (or plain flour/salt/baking powder mixture option above), and milk. Mix to a smooth batter. Pour over melted butter, but do not stir. Empty one can of pitted unsweetened cherries (undrained) over the batter, and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes. Batter will rise to the top. Cobbler may take 45 minutes until brown and done in middle. Test the center as you would for a cake.
