8 cups tart apples (pared and sliced)
best are Empire, Macintosh and Jonathan (they break down easily)
a single Granny Smith apple is good too.
⅔ to ¾ cup brown sugar
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ oats
¾ tsp. ground cinnamon
¾ tsp. ground nutmeg
½ cup butter, softened

Directions:

Heat oven 375º and grease baking pan with butter..
Place apples in pan.
Mix remaining ingredients thoroughly, by hand, and spread over apples.
Bake 30 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown.
Serve warm and, if desired, with ice cream.
