Melt 1 pint sugar over fire. Meantime, cook milk and 2 pints sugar.
When 1 pint of sugar has melted, pour in hot milk and sugar. Stir all the time.
Now, cook until 138º, or until a small amount dropped in cold water forms a firm ball.
Turn out fire. Add the soda all at once. Stir well. As soda foams, add butter. Stir well.
Set in a cool place for 10 minutes. (At the end of that time) beat until dull. Add nuts.
Pour on to a prepared sheet.
Cut when firm.
