Directions:
In a medium size heavy saucepan melt butter. Stir in sugar and salt; then add corn syrup and mix well. Stir in milk. Stirring continuously, cook to 245 degrees*. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour into a buttered 9x13 inch Pyrex pan. When cooled cut into bite size pieces and wrap in wax paper squares (about 4x6 in.). Makes about 75 pieces.
*245 degrees is the recommended temperature, for softer caramels I cook to 241 degrees.

Microwave directions: Combine all ingredients (except vanilla) in a 4 qt. microwave safe bowl. Cook on high for about 15-17 minutes (245 degrees), stirring every 3 minutes. Add vanilla, pour into 9x13 pan, etc.
