1 cup sugar
1/4 cup softened butter
1 egg
3 cups fine peeled, shredded red apples (about 3 large)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts, optional
1 cup flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Sauce:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup light cream
1/2 tsp. vanilla
dash of nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Mix everything except apples. Grate apples last; add to mixture. Pour into a well-greased 9 x 9 cake pan.
Bake 350º for 45 minutes. Serve warm.

Sauce: Mix butter, sugar and light cream in a saucepan. Heat on low about 12 to 15 minutes. Stir constantly; until slightly thick. Do not boil. Take from heat, add vanilla and a dash of nutmeg.

Serve cake warm with whipped cream and sauce.
