1 1/2 c sugar (Betty, suggests trying 1/4 c.)
3 T corn starch
1 T flour
1 rounded T cocoa (cooking spoon, not measuring spoon)
salt, small pinch
3 c. milk
3 egg yolks
1 t. vanilla

Meringue:
3 egg whites
1/2 t. vanilla
1/4 t. cream of tartar
3 T sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Mix in saucepan, sugar, cornstarch, flour, cocoa, and salt. Stir milk in gradually. Cook over moderate heat until mixture thickens and boils. Boil one minute. Beat slightly 3 egg yolks.

Cool chocolate mixture slightly and stir 1/2 of it gradually into beaten egg yolks. Return egg and chocolate mixture to pan gradually and boil one minute. Stir in vanilla.

Meringue:
Add egg whites, vanilla, and cream of tartar. Beat to a soft peak (it was still foamy). Gradually add sugar and beat to stiff peaks.

Bake 350º until brown about 12 to 15 minutes.
