1 cup pastry flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp cinnamon
1 cup raisins
8 oz candied cherries
8 oz mixed peel
¾ cup currents
1 cup chopped suet
1 cup lightly packed brown sugar
1 egg
3 Tbsp molasses
1 cup fine dry bread crumbs
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
¼ cup slivered blanched almonds

1. Grease a 1 quart mold
2. Stir flour, baking soda and cinnamon together to blend.
3. Combine raisins, candied cherries, mixed peel and currents. Sprinkle fruit with ¼ cup of flour mixture.
4. Beat together suet, brown sugar, egg and molasses.
5. Combine remaining flour mixture with bread crumbs. Add dry ingredients to suet mixture alternately with buttermilk. Stir in floured fruit and almonds.
6. Turn batter into prepared mold. Cover with wax paper and foil and tie tightly. Steam for 3 hours. Turn out of mold immediately and allow to cool.
7. Store tightly wrapped. To reheat for serving, return to mold, cover as before, and steam for 1 ½ hours.
8. Serve with Hard Sauce, Toffee Sauce, or warm maple syrup seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
