Directions:Grandma Thompson was not much of a cook. That is why this section is a little slim. She and Grandpa lived with us in a basement apartment. It was great growing up with grandparents so close. During the day, Grandpa worked as a cab dispatcher and Grandma worked at a linen company.
Grandma loved to shop and, working downtown St. Louis, it was easy to shop. One day, she brought home a new blouse. She decided she didn't like it and took it back and exchanged it for another one. After bring the new one home, she again decided she didn't like it and exchanged it again. This went on for several blouses. Finally, she settled on the blouse she had brought home the first time.
On Saturdays, Grandma liked to make breakfast for me and Jim (usually pancakes or French toast). One morning as she was making us seconds of French toast, she reached on the shelf above the stove for the bottle of oil. She accidentally got vinegar instead and poured it into the skillet. No seconds that morning.
Grandma also sewed and made our Halloween costumes several years. Two stand out in my memory. One was for Jim. He wanted to be the headless horseman. Grandma fashioned a piece of cardboard that fit on the top of his head and draped a see-through fabric over it. He carried a pumpkin under his arm. During the costume judging, they kept looking and asking "Where's his head?" Apparently, the judges didn't know the story.
The other memorable costume was one I saw when I had watched an ice skating show. The skaters wore butterfly costumes and I thought they were so beautiful. Grandma said she could make it for me. She made the wings from nylon/silky stuff with a leopard print - because butterflies have spots, she said. She also glued gold sequins over them to add sparkle. To complete the outfit, I wore a black leotard and tights. I won first prize - - as a bat! |
