1 lb. lean ground beef
1 lb. lean ground pork
1 onion finely chopped
½ cup dry Italian-style bread crumbs
¼ cup Parmesan cheese
1 Tbsp. chopped fresh thyme
2 eggs, beaten

Marinara Sauce:
1 large can (28 oz.) whole peeled tomatoes, mashed
1 medium yellow onion, peeled and halved
1 large cloves garlic, peeled but left whole
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 tsp. each dried oregano, basil, parsley
1 tsp. sugar
salt, to taste (if necessary)
1 bay leaf

Heat oven to 350ºF.
Combine all ingredients except pasta sauce and water and mix until just blended; shape into 24 (2-inch) meatballs.
Place on rimmed baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray.
Bake 15-17 minutes or until done
In the meantime, in heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine tomatoes (with juice), halved onion, garlic cloves, olive oil, oregano, basil, parsley sugar, salt (if necessary) and bay leaf. Bring the sauce to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the pot from heat and remove the larger pieces of onion. Using an immersion blender stir the sauce until smooth.
Transfer meatballs to Dutch oven or large deep skillet sprayed with cooking spray.
Add pasta sauce; stir to evenly coat meatballs.
Add to meatballs; stir. Simmer 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
