1 cup lard or shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup water
2 1/2 cups rolled oats
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 t soda
1 t salt
1 pound dates (raisins, dried apricots)
1 T lemon juice or 1 T orange juice
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together, lard, brown sugar, water, oats. Add flour, soda and salt. Divide this in half and pat on a 12x17 sheet. Boil together fruit, juice, sugar and water. Cook till thick. Cool this and spread on the dough. Add nuts if you like. Take remaining dough between wax paper on 2 sheets and chill it well. Roll out to size of pan and place on top. Bake 30 minutes at 350º. Cut into squares.
