3/4 cup butter
2 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 t vanilla
3 eggs
3 oz unsweetened chocolate melted
3 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 t soda
3/4 t salt
1 1/2 cup ice water

Filling:
1 cup milk
1/2 cup chopped dates
1 T flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 t vanilla

Frosting:
4T butter
4 blocks Baker's Chocolate
1/3 cut hot milk
3 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
1 t vanilla
1/8 t salt

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time and beat thoroughly. Add melted unsweetened chocolate and mix well. Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add flour mixture to batter in three parts, alternating flour and water. Beat this mixture thoroughly and thoroughly again. Put into 3 eight inch layer pans that are waxed and floured. Bake until the layers begin to pull away from the pans. While cake is cooking cook date filling until mixture is firm. Then let the filling cool before placing it between the cooled cake layers. For frosting melt butter and chocolate in double boiler; stir until blended. Stir hot milk into sugar and beat until smooth. Stir in vanilla, salt and chocolate mixture, beat until smooth and thickened (about 5 minutes). Frost cake.
