1 ½ cups granulated sugar
7 to 8 cups all-purpose flour
Melted butter

Directions:
In a large bowl, sprinkle the yeast over the warm water and set aside. Warm the milk, butter and salt in a small saucepan just until the butter is melted. Cool to lukewarm.

Whisk together the eggs and sugar until light coloured. Add the milk mixture to the eggs and combine with the yeast. Gradually beat in 3 cups of the flour. Continue to add flour a cupful at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Turn out dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth, 5 to 7 minutes, adding more flour as necessary. Gather into a ball and transfer to a well-oiled mixing bowl, turning dough to oil the top. Cover with a damp towel and let rise until doubled, about 1½ hours. Punch down and let rest for 10 minutes. Cut into 4 equal pieces, shaping each into a smooth ball. Flatten into 4 rounds and place on well-oiled or parchment-lined baking sheets. Cover and and let rise until doubled.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350ºF for 30 minutes or until well browned. Brush with a little extra melted butter while hot. Let cool before slicing.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Mom always made big loaves of Massa. These are about half the size but you could always cut into 2 pieces for bigger loaves.
Massa was a family and Portuguese tradition especially during Easter & Christmas.
